Teaching & Learning

At St Brendan’s students are taught and reported on according to the standards set out in Victorian Essential Learning Standards. Learning is designed to be purposeful and to address the knowledge and skill development of our students.
Learning structures have been set in place to ensure children are taught according to their individual needs. Children work in small groups with teachers during literacy and numeracy blocks.

Learning in the P-2 area focuses on ensuring the basic blocks for learning are in place. Learning in the Years 3-6 area develops children’s skills and knowledge in preparation for a rapidly changing world.

Programs are available to cater for children with special needs. In 2009 the EMU program is being implemented. This program targets children in the Year 1 /2 area who need extra assistance in the area of Maths. In 2009 the Reading Recovery program is being run for students in Year 1 who need extra assistance in the area of reading. In 2008 we have run a Maths extension program for students in Years 3-6 which has been very successful and we will continue to do this.

Our specialist programs include AUSLAN, Physical Education, Drama, Music and Information Communication Technology. A music teacher provides private lessons for students during school time.

Each year a specific domain is targeted in which teachers focus their learning. In 2009 this is reading / writing and numeracy
